The Scottsburg Warriors continued their undefeated start to the 2025 season Friday night with a gritty 23–6 victory over Salem in the Highway 56 “Jay Ray” Classic. The win moves Scottsburg to 3–0 overall and 2–0 in the Mid-Southern Conference, while the Lions dropped to 1–2. The Warriors set the tone early with a defensive spark. Senior lineman Jacob June pounced on a Salem fumble and rumbled 40 yards for a touchdown, giving Scottsburg a jolt of momentum and a 7–0 lead. After Salem briefly answered with a short rushing score to cut the margin to 7–6, the Warrior defense dug in and controlled the rest of the night. Scottsburg forced mistakes, recorded a safety in the third quarter, and kept the Lions’ passing game in check. On offense, senior quarterback Nathan Byrd spread the ball around, finishing 7-of-14 for 115 yards and two touchdown passes. His scoring strikes went to Luke Hamilton and Garrett Boling, while senior running back Landon Shuck anchored the ground attack with 82 rushing yards and added 38 more as a receiver. Scottsburg’s ability to balance the run and pass wore down the Lions in the second half. The Warriors pulled away in the fourth quarter with two more touchdowns, sealing a convincing road win in front of a packed Salem crowd. Head coach Kyle Mullins praised his team’s resiliency after the game. “Our defense really carried us early and set the tone,” he said. “We’ve got a group that fights for each other, and that’s showing every week.” With the win, the Warriors remain in the hunt at the top of the MSC standings. The Warriors travel to Corydon Central next week to try and extend their perfect season, while Salem will try to regroup against Brownstown Central.
